How to actually get better at running 1:1s (without another course)

20 June 2026 · 5 min read

Most managers don't lack ideas about how to run a better 1:1 — they lack feedback on the 1:1s they actually run. You leave the meeting thinking it went well, and three weeks later nobody remembers what was agreed. Insight isn't the bottleneck; follow-through is.

Why courses and books rarely move the needle

Generic advice is abstract. It can't see that you tend to interrupt before a report finishes their thought, or that you accept vague status updates without probing. Real change comes from noticing your own patterns in your own conversations — then practising one small adjustment at a time.

A simple loop that works

  • Capture the meeting (any recorder you already use — Plaud, Granola, Zoom).
  • Review one specific behaviour: where did you add value, where did you cut someone off?
  • Commit to a single change for your next 1:1 — e.g. ask one clarifying question before responding.
  • Check the next transcript for evidence that the behaviour actually showed up.

The magic isn't the analysis — it's closing the loop. When you can see, with a verbatim quote, whether you did the thing you committed to, change stops being a vague intention and becomes a measurable habit.

How Cutivo does this automatically

Cutivo connects to the recorder you already use, analyses each real conversation minutes after it ends, and tells you the one thing that went well and the one to work on — then watches your next meetings to confirm you followed through. No uploading, no extra coaching call. Coaching that compounds, from the meetings you're already in.
